Free Self Defense Seminar
Learn the Principles of Effective Self Defense and Good Physical Conditioning

Visitors are welcome to come and watch our classes. However, every class is different and adapted to the participants; just viewing a class or two might not give you a good understanding of our overall program. We recommend that people who are interested in learning more about self defense, physical conditioning, or the complete Via Potentia program attend our free monthly public seminar.
The seminar runs from 6:00 to 9:00 PM on the last Friday of every month, and is intended for ages 13 and up. Younger children may attend as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Click here for directions to the gym.
This is a walk-in, first-come, first-served class. Space is limited, so we recommend that you arrive early. Wear comfortable, durable clothing. Please bring a friend or family member.
This is not a sales presentation. The principles and practices we teach in this class can improve or save your life. We cover the following:
- The difference between dynamic and static stretching, why each is important, and the proper order in which to do them.
- When and how to do strength-building exercises so as to improve your conditioning yet minimize injuries.
- A complete dynamic stretching routine.
- A complete strength building exercise routine.
- A complete static stretching routine.
- The four (or five) most important principles of self defense that can save your life, even if you never learn a single self defense move.
- Conventional and improvised weapons of self defense (and why weapons are critical for self defense).
- A couple basic self defense drills.
Please do not come to the seminar expecting to learn the three secret moves that will defeat any attacker. There isn't any such combination, and it would be irresponsible of us to teach you a variety of techniques and combinations in one sitting. Fighting techniques simply do not work unless you train with them properly and learn to develop spontaneous power. That takes weeks of training. What we will show you is some examples of techniques, and how we go about training people who do want to learn them in the full class.
Why am I doing this? First, Via Potentia is a not-for-profit organization. Part of our mission is public service. It is my sincere hope that the information you learn in this seminar can help you in your life. Second, I am looking for people who share our values and might be interested in participating in the full Via Potentia program. This seminar gives you three hours to see what we're about, and also allows me to see if you may be a suitable candidate for the full curriculum.
We accept (but do not require) donations for this class. They will be forwarded to the McMinnville Food Closet, St. Vincent de Paul, the Crisis Pregnancy Center, or a similar charity.
