In Via Potentia tests are encouraged but optional. Unlike many traditional martial arts, we do not charge you for tests, nor do we withhold instruction from you if you haven't taken one; as long as you demonstrate the necessary conditioning and control, instruction will continue.
We have both major and minor tests. We measure physical progress -- strength, endurance and flexibility -- quarterly. These are the minor tests. The tests are open-door; family and friends may watch. The purpose of the quarterly tests is for the participants to measure their own progress.
Roughly once per year there is a more intense test called a "stage exam." This is a major test. These serve as a right of passage and comprehensive evaluation as you move from certain stages of the program to others; they consist of the following:
- General warm-up
- Verbal questions
- Demonstration of self-defense combinations (one for each term of practice)
- Forms -- 3, 6 or 9 forms in succession
- Upright sparring for 3, 6 or 9 minutes without break
- Grappling for 3, 6 or 9 minutes without break
- Jump rope for 3, 6 or 9 minutes without break
- Calisthenic and Flexibility measurements -- pull-ups, push-ups, squats, sit-ups, back arches, straddle stretches and forward stretches
Both the major and minor tests are similar in content, but major exams are more intense and have requirements that must be met to pass. Those who pass a stage-examination receive a display-certificate, associated medals, and a top representing their new level of participation.
Kids may also qualify to receive the Presidential Fitness Award, depending on their performance.
